The Story: Creating Your Transformation Blueprint

Last week, I started accepting people into my first true “mentorship” group in over 5 years.

And as I’ve started doing calls with these incredibly motivated entrepreneurs, there’s one thing that really stuck out.

The “market” and “hook” that some are going for were either too generic or just not playing to their strength.

All of my clients information shall remain confidential (unless I get permission to share their names) – but I’d like to share a story about one of them with his name changed.

MEET “ERIC”

Let’s call him Eric, shall we?

When we did our strategy call I immediately liked his energy and enthusiasm.  You can’t help but root for a guy like Eric.

He said he wanted to become the “Facebook” guy – but he hadn’t had any success with Facebook before. He tried a webinar and had 3 people register before he had met me. It simply wasn’t working.

It didn’t work because people just know when you are “faking it” and not being true to yourself.

Deep down you feel like a fraud and, whether you know it or not, it comes through in your marketing.

So I said to Eric, “let’s forget being the Facebook guy – and dig deep into YOUR STORY.

After 5 minutes, I was blown away.

He made his first fortune in the travel industry and lost it all after 9/11.

But he came back strong in the real estate market. And then the housing crisis hit and again, he lost it all.

In fact, he had so much stress he suffered a mini-stroke which affected his speech.

But AGAIN he came back because he never gives up (and he’s a very smart marketer!).

And it quickly became clear it’s his “story” that people will love.

Because of his slightly impaired speech due to the stroke – he’s scared to do public speaking, but I told him we have to confront those fears. In fact, he used a “voiceover” person with his Facebook program so they wouldn’t hear his voice.

I told him to use the story and use your strength to help other people achieve their dreams. Never be ashamed of who you are and what you’ve gone through. That’s a STRENGTH to be proud of, not something to hide.

So that’s his new path.

Part motivational speaker. Part marketing wizard. And all heart.

When he’s ready (and I get his permission), I’ll introduce you to this amazing man.

And he WILL be successful in his new role.

He’s still overcoming some fear – but he’s pushing through and will simply crush it when he’s ready. And he will change a lot of lives.

TAKEAWAY

People love a story.

It’s NOT about just becoming the “Facebook” person or the “Membership” guru. It’s more than that. They want someone to connect to.

Dig deep. I mean really deep into your soul.

Think about your story. Where you came from. Obstacles you’ve overcome. Challenges you’ve met head on. People you have helped along your journey through life.

And then, think about how your story can change the world.

That, my friend is where lives are transformed and the true magic happens.

Welcome to REAL marketing, my friend. Your journey begins today.

Are Your Ready for the New Year

I posted this on my Facebook page and it seems to resonate with lots of people:

It’s so simple, isn’t it?

Yes, I’ve said this before but it’s so important is requires you hearing it over and over again to really sink in.

Not blaming others for the size of your bank account?

Not blaming others for the size of your waist?

Not blaming others for your lack of happiness?

People who are doing great love it – and most people who are struggling find this medicine a bit hard to swallow.

So many have a sense of entitlement. Like they are ENTITLED to success or everyones OWES them something. Sorry, it doesn’t work that way. If you want it, it’s on your shoulders.

WHAT ARE YOU FILLING YOUR HEAD WITH?

I’ve been asked to write a “self improvement” book – but it would be the shortest book on the planet. Probably 1 or 2 pages. Mostly filled with just common sense.

There would be some pearls of wisdom (like this: my popular post – 61 lessons in 10 years online), however it would begin and end with TAKING RESPONSIBILITY.

Why are we so quick to accept the accolades for success but so quick to blame others if we fail.

“It’s the economy”, “My market sucks”, “My competitor tells lies to sell more products” … and the list goes on and on.

I’m sorry, but it’s YOUR fault.

Bad economy? Some of the largest, most profitable companies today  (Microsoft, FedEx, GE, etc.) were started during recessions.

You market sucks? Then YOU picked the wrong market, my friend. Change markets. You have a website that sells beepers? Then stop selling beepers! (and yes, I used to have a beeper in the 90s!)

Your competitor is a liar? Then highlight the differences by selling with integrity and attract even better customers into your life.

PLEASE…

I can’t stress how important this message is. Stop asking about “what’s the best shopping cart” or “what 7-sequence autoresponder works best”… most of your failures have to do with your MINDSET.

I’ve screwed up so many times – but I’m ready to take the heat for it just as quickly as I celebrate a win.

If the crap hits the fan do you stand up and face the fire or do you run and hide?

Do you brush yourself off and learn from your mistakes? Or do you just give up?

The way you respond to your hits and misses will determine your success much more than a “split test on a landing page”.

Stop listening to the wrong people. Stop wasting your time with hype and theory.

Connect with your source of goodness. Get out there and help people.

And always, always take responsibility. Always.

Your coach has spoken.

Inside My "Virtual Office" (Run a Light, Fast and Agile Business)

I see so many people who are full of great ideas and want to change the world – but they can’t get out of their own way.

They make it so difficult when it doesn’t have to be. It really doesn’t.

Do you want to know where I run 90% of my business from? It’s usually my local Starbucks (or Cosi or even Barnes and Noble).

Here’s a picture of my “virtual office” I am writing this blog post from this morning:

That’s right – it’s all run from this MacBook air that’s just 11 inches and weighs just 2.3 pounds.

No need for a fancy office. No need for in-person employees. No need for added overhead.

I like my business to be just like my laptop… light, fastagile and uncluttered.

As an entrepreneur you need to take fast, decisive action. You need to move quickly. No one will wait around for you.

Each day you put off changing lives and generating income is another lost opportunity. You never get that day back. Ever.

Want to see what else I used in my “virtual office”?

THE 3 TOOLS I USE THE MOST…

Here are 3 of the tools I use everyday…

Basecamp: To manage multiple projects and keep myself organized. Pricing starts at just $20/month

Google Docs and Google Drive: Create documents, spreadsheets and forms. And now it includes tons of free storage on gdrive. Oh yeah, it’s free.

Skype: I use this to do coaching calls. Yep, it’s free too.

If you’d like to copy my success, fill out the application to see if you qualify for a free strategy call with me. We can dig into your business, see where your opportunities are and figure out if you are the right fit for my mentoring.

DO YOU WORK “VIRTUALLY”?

P.S. I’m only working with a few people on a mentorship level. Apply for a complimentary strategy call here.

Continuity Questions?

On December 26th, I am going to open the doors for Continuity Summit 4.

But this year, it will be different. Much different.

Rather than have to travel to Stamford, CT to experience over 20+ hours of pure recurring revenue training – you’ll be able to access ALL the sessions right from the comfort of your own home. Heck, you can even watch these sessions in your pajamas (don’t worry, I won’t tell).

Why am I doing it ONLINE this year instead of in-person? The answers are quite simple…

1. So more people can attend. There will be no travel and time restrictions – and therefore, no excuse not to attend. Instead of having 500 people attend, we can have 50,000 attend.

2. So it can be more affordable. Putting on an in-person event takes money and resources. I’m passing all of those savings onto you.

3. So we can raise more money. We’re building another school in Kenya and I have pledged to donate 50% of the profits of CS4 directly to build another school!

4. So I can have a life. Running an event knocks me on my butt for a few weeks after. So this time, I’ll have more energy for my wife and kids especially during holiday time!

WHAT DO YOU WANT TO SEE?

So here’s my question to you…

What topics would YOU like to see covered in CS4?

What questions would you like answered?

The more feedback you can provide below, the better the experience for all attendees.

Thanks for your time and look forward to seeing your questions…

PLEASE POST YOUR TOP QUESTIONS ABOUT CONTINUITY BELOW.
WHAT TOPICS WOULD YOU LIKE TO KNOW MORE ABOUT?

P.S. Make sure to get on the early-bird list for Continuity Summit 4 right here.

My 8 Chanukkah "Gifts" For You

Right now, we are in full swing celebrating Chanukkah in the Lee house. And to celebrate with you, my loyal subscriber who I think of as part of my family – I’d like to give you a gift.

Well, since it’s Chanukkah and we’re supposed to give 8 gifts, it shall be 8 for you.

Now, these “gifts” will be more valuable than any commercial item. More valuable than an iPad, an Amazon gift card or even that Brady Bunch DVD box set you have been dreaming about.

These are the gifts of wisdom. Some things I have learned over the years as an entrepreneur and I’d like to pass on to you.

Some might be common sense – but don’t let the simplicity of the message get lost. Embrace these 8 gifts and make them a part of you. They are the gifts that keep on giving…

Here they are in all their glory…

GIFT #1: THE GIFT OF LOVE
Always create every product, blog post, video or article from a place of love. When you create and build a business that comes from the right place because you truly LOVE your customers – you can’t lose.

GIFT #2: THE GIFT OF OVERDELIVERING
Give MORE than people expect. Instead of thinking “how little can I deliver for $100”, instead think, “how much value can I pack into the $100 so they are delirious with pleasure”. Make them so happy with doing business with you that THEY become your evangelist.

GIFT #3: THE GIFT OF BALANCE
Never lose sight of why you are doing what it is you’re doing. It’s probably not really for the ferrari or the mansion. It’s likely to have more freedom to spend with your family. Think of it like this… if you knew with 100% certainty that tomorrow was your last day, how would you spend it? And do more of that!

GIFT #4: THE GIFT OF CONTINUITY INCOME
Always find a way to turn your business into a repeatable business. Membership sites, coaching programs, newsletters, software, of-the-month programs and more are just the start. This is true freedom, but don’t forget to reread gifts 1&2 before creating the program!

GIFT #5: THE GIFT OF HUSTLE
If you want success you must work for it – and there’s no getting around it. You must get out of your comfort zone to send that email or to make the call. Write for other sites, speak at events, and get VISIBLE in your market. Hustle, hustle, hustle.

GIFT #6: THE GIFT OF SUPPORTIVE COMMUNITY
Do whatever you can to surround yourself with positive, supportive people. No exceptions. Eliminate (or strictly limit) the negative people from your life. It’s one of the main reasons I created FounderFly.

GIFT #7: THE GIFT OF COMMUNICATION
There’s no question, “communication” is the new currency. If you want to thrive in this new world, you must become a better writer, speaker and communicator. Period. Study and practice better communication.

GIFT #8: THE GIFT OF TRUST
There is no better way to grow a business than by building trust. From your initial sale to customer retention, trust is the key. And once you break their trust – you’re done. Be honest. Be open. Be authentic. Be transparent.

Ok, I said I’d give you 8, but here’s a 9th “bonus” gift.

BONUS GIFT #9: THE GIFT OF RESTARTING
Along the way, stuff happens. You WILL make mistakes. You WILL be tempted to do something that’s not 100% aligned with your ethics. You WILL send an email you’ll regret sending. You WILL partner with someone you shouldn’t have.

When you start to stray (just as I have), admit what you’ve done wrong, do whatever you can to immediately make it right and learn from your mistake.

People are forgiving so there’s no need to run and hide. You must face the music. It’s NEVER to late to “restart”. Never.

So there you go… no matter what religion you practice (or if you don’t practice any religion), please enjoy these “gifts”.

Now get out there, pass these gifts on and change the world.

YOUR COMMENTS ARE ALWAYS WELCOME

P.S. Here’s the gift that keeps on giving 24/7.

You CAN Go Back Home… Connecting With Your Source

Somewhere along with path, I lost my way. Big time.

It was 2009 and after a couple of years of testing the waters in the world of “Internet marketing” during my transition away from purely a “fitness” guy – I decided to do a BIG event that was 100% marketing.

This event was called “The Continuity Summit”. It took place in Stamford, CT. The speakers were killer and hundreds of attendees came from all over the world. In fact, it was the FIRST event to focus entirely on “recurring revenue”.

Man, I was so excited and the world looked full of promise.

THE IDEA TO GIVE BACK AND BUILD A SCHOOL

At that event, I teamed up with my friend, Cynthia Kersey, to try and raise enough money to build a school in Emori Joi. And in about 20 minutes live on stage – we reached our goal of $25K and it was done.

You can see the very first Continuity Summit School below. That was built using the funds we raised at the event.

Anyone who was there remembers how powerful that moment was. The generosity of the attendees literally brought me to tears.

But like I said at the beginning of this post – I lost my way…

LOSING MY WAY

As good as that moment felt, for some reason, I never did it again. I don’t know why.

2 more Continuity Summit. And 1 DotComXpo – and I didn’t use whatever so-called “influence” I have in the marketplace to do more.

Fresh out of college I went to work as a recreational therapist in a children’s rehab hospital. My only goal was to help as many kids and families as possible. It was a pretty simple goal. And while I knew I’d be successful in whatever I did (and loved started part-time businesses) – becoming a “millionaire” was never the goal.

But over the years I went into some dark places.

I started to hang-out with some people who’s motives were clearly not in the right place.

I created some products that I shouldn’t have.

I took on some project I clearly should have said NO to.

And as I started to see the true “dark side” of Internet marketing – I became very jaded. And negative. And for a while, I couldn’t write a blog post without dropping an “F” bomb or putting someone else down.

But what’s more…

I haven’t done a thing to try and raise more money for charity since that first Continuity Summit. Don’t get me wrong, my wife and I support a lot of charities locally – but I haven’t done enough with my “platform” to make even more of an impact.

FINDING MY WAY BACK
Over the past few months, I’ve done a lot of soul searching. Focusing more on being a better husband. A better father. And a better example for my loyal subscribers.

Yesterday I had one of those moments of clarity that seemed so clear. It was a “why the heck haven’t I done this sooner” ideas.

It’s a way to help thousands of entrepreneurs in the one area I know like the back of my hand (continuity income), build ANOTHER school and still help my business (after all, I still firmly believe in capitalism – I haven’t gotten too soft on you!)

Here’s the deal…

After a 2 year hiatus – the Continuity Summit is back. That’s right, #4 baby!

The FIRST and ONLY event to focus 100% on recurring revenue. Membership sites, continuity, retention, marketing, coaching programs, inner circles, subscriptions, apps, “of-the-month” programs, newsletters, software, nano-continuity, and much more.

But this year it will be different.

Rather than just being able to reach the 500 people who can afford the $1,000 price tag (plus travel expenses and time away from family to attend the CS in person) – this year it will be ONLINE.

That’s right – ALL of the sessions will take place right over the Internet so you can access every session from the comfort of your own home.

And here’s the part that gets me REALLY excited.

50% OF ALL PROFITS from the registrations will go DIRECTLY to build another school. This one will be in Kenya.

The benefits are two-fold.

Help yourself build a profitable business that delivers MONTHLY income (the holy grail of marketing). AND, at the same time, make an even bigger impact in the world by helping to build another Continuity Summit school.

YOU win. The kids win. We all win together – just like it should be.

GETTING INVOLVED… NEXT STEPS

Here’s what to do next…

1. VIP LIST: Make sure to get on our Continuity Summit 4 VIP list for a special bonus.

2. WANT TO SPEAK? We already have a bunch of speaking spots filled – but I want to hear from you. If you currently run a continuity program of ANY kind in ANY market – tell me about it. Let me know your site and what you can speak about. Feel free to brag and no, you do NOT have to be a “guru” – even a small niche continuity site earning an extra $1k per month would be great. We are going to have lots of sessions and panels if you don’t want to do a full 60 minute session. Just email me at cs4@ryanlee.com with all the information with SUBJECT = SPEAKER.

That’s it. I’m back, ready to deliver outstanding value and change the world.

Yep… just another day at “Starbucks”.
