My "Semi-Famous" Annual Prediction for 2014 (Part II)

Last week, I gave the first of my 2014 predictions. It was about the rise of the “publisher” (you can read it here).

Now, it’s time for my second prediction of the shift in digital marketing for the upcoming year…

bigstock-Business-man-working-with-lapt-42571708Maybe it started with the late Don Lapre with his catchy informercial hook, “you can make millions with thousands of tiny little classified ads”, I’m not sure.

But the idea of setting up dozens (or hundreds) of tiny little web sites in niches with zero work that brings in millions of dollars was appealing (and still is). However, that model will take it’s last breath this year.

Those who are laser-focused on ONE market are the people who will have big breakthroughs this year.

Why the change?

First – you can’t outsmart Google. And with some of their recent changes, it became obvious that low-value static sites with zero authority are frowned upon by Google.

Boom – just like that lots of these entrepreneurs saw their business decimated overnight with one Google update.

And as the cost of customer acquisition has risen, it’s not as easy to buy customers in niche markets for pennies anymore. So, if you want to play that game, you must have a very strong, deep and well converting funnel – or you will lose your shirt.

Which brings me to my point (yes, there is a point).

This is the year lifestyle business entrepreneurs get serious and dominate niches and micro-niches.

One of my clients, John Lee Dumas, is the perfect example of where the smart entrepreneurs will find success in 2014 and beyond.

He went deep into his market (entrepreneurs) by focusing on one big traffic strategy (his method is podcasting, yours might be youtube, facebook, etc.). Now, all of his products and backend services cater exclusively to his market (in fact, John just launched a new program for budding podcasters). He’s 100% focused on dominating his market.

Another client, Aviv Vana, took his love of cinematography and created a successful site and online summit (his first event, Big League CineSummit, was a major success).

They both resisted the urge to jump from market to market (Ok, with Aviv I had to constantly keep him focused, but he eventually saw the light!). That’s where entrepreneurs have gotten into trouble, by jumping from niche to niche.

It would have been easy for Aviv to try his event format in another market (like accountants) but that would have been a big mistake. He’s going deep into his market and his new fans are responding.

Screen Shot 2013-12-31 at 8.49.01 AM

2014 will have no mercy for people who are half-committed. If you take a misstep, there will be competitors just waiting to service your customers.

If you are trying to position yourself as an expert and have a blog that hasn’t been updated in 3 months, you’re dead in the water. Or a podcast that was last recorded when a Bush was president.. the results are the same. Procrastinators will have no room to breathe.

If you want to reach six, seven or even eight figures in your business, this year you must go deep with the idea of dominating this year.

There are too many smart, aggressive competitors online now. With more and more people jumping into the waters every day. If you are not focused on one market in 2014, they will eat your lunch – trust me on that one.

There is one exception to this rule in 2014.. and that’s focusing on a 3rd party platform like Kindle publishing.

Our members in 6FKC are having massive success publishing books in different markets on Kindle – and the reason is because Amazon is feeding the traffic. If those “micro-niched” publications were just floating alone in the world wide web with awful names like – there would be no sales. However, Amazon continues to drive hundreds of millions of eager buyers to the marketplace. The trust is already established with Amazon and there’s no need for a 20 page sales letter.

But if you take a step back, another reason for their success is the focus on ONE marketing channel. They are going deep with one platform. Other platforms to explore are iTunes and even places like udemy.

This isn’t all gloom and doom – there is amazing opportunity. For a successful 2014 you have to be crystal clear on what business you are in and WHO you are serving, it’s that simple.

You must stop trying to setup 30 different sites for 30 different products with 30 different funnels and 30 different social media accounts.

Either go deep into ONE market or become a full-fledged publisher focusing on one platform to start.

This is going to be an exciting year for those who stop “playing” business and start getting serious. For the rest.. your window is almost closed.

P.S. I’m holding a live, free training going into detail about how to dominate 2014. Grab your spot here.

Have a Happy (Uncluttered) New Year…

It’s almost time to ring in the New Year, and what better way than to start 2014 than with a clean slate?

I have coached thousands of people – and one of the biggest business killers is a combination of “lack of focus”. And when you have a cluttered business – you naturally feel unfocused.

Here are four simple tasks to get your business un-cluttered so you can focus on world domination in 2014… is that too much to ask for?

Just follow these steps below and you won’t believe the sense of calm and clarity you’ll achieve. Give it a try today…

Go through your inbox. And every list you are on which provides zero value – unsubscribe today.

You know which one’s I’m talking about. Where they give no content and it’s only pitch after pitch (and if you are on my list and think I provide no value – then unsubscribe from mine too!). You might be surprised just how many no-content lists you are on.

These emails will distract you with bright shiny objects and are business killers. Trust me, you won’t miss anything. And you will have a more productive day.

Remove everything from both of your desktops.

One is your actual computer desktop background. Put all of those files into one folder and get them off your desktop.

And the second desktop is your workspace. Only keep what you use every day (computer and maybe a pencil and notebook). Get rid of things like staplers, tape, and paperclips.

Depending on how many emails you have, set aside a few hours to get your inbox to zero. Since I was off a few days for Christmas, mine is now at 102, but I will get back to zero today.

And when you have a clean inbox, you can’t imagine the sense of clarity and freedom you experience.

If you like to work at coffee shops like I do – you need something to carry your laptop. And that laptop bag can quickly become cluttered with papers, business cards and who knows what else.

Spend a few minutes and trash everything you don’t need. My messenger bag has only my laptop, pen and a composition notebook – and it’s sweet indeed.

There you go.. some simple things you can do today to free your mind and de-clutter your business.

And once you get un-cluttered, set aside just 10 minutes a day to stay that way!

My Semi-Famous Annual Predictions: 2014

It’s that time where I take out my crystal ball and predict what I believe will be the big trends for the upcoming year.

Am I always right? Well… of course.

See my prediction from last year. I predicted 2013 will be the “year of the coach” (see the post here)Fast forward to today.. and big ticket coaching is the hottest aspect of online marketing.

So what will the future hold for 2014?

It will be a big year.. so let’s get started (this might end up being a multi-part series)…

Being an “expert” is great. There’s no doubt about it.

But this year, you are going to see more smart and savvy “experts” (yes, I’ll humbly include myself in this category) who will transition to the role of a PUBLISHER.

Why the transition?

After all, we’ve known for years while it’s nice to be an author.. it’s better to actually own the publishing company. And have a stable of contributors and products working for you that doesn’t depend on one person’s name.

It takes all the pressure of your shoulders and diversifies your income.

But why a big shift in 2014? After all, so many struggle to get one product out there and selling, how the heck can they create dozens of products?

Here’s the big reason this will be the year of the publisher…

kindleitunesIt’s all about the hyper-growth of 3rd party platforms.

You can now publish products on their platforms while they collect the money AND drive the traffic.

Just about everybody on the planet has either a smartphone, tablet or both. And Apps have made it easy to consume content from any platform anywhere.

I can read a Kindle book on my iPhone or listen to a podcast through my laptop. There are zero boundaries. Plus, you can purchase these low-friction impulse items starting at $.99.

The two biggest players in this world are:

#1. Amazon

#2. iTunes

And now, Google is making a serious run at them with Google Play.

I’m sure it won’t be long until Facebook puts it’s hat into this lucrative ring. After all, they just become a “middleman” handling the transaction and taking a commission.

Remember, in the past the biggest obstacle was traffic – but that is virtually eliminated as it’s in Amazon’s and Apples’s best interest to sell your products. Period.

I helped launch a new publishing group called the 6 Figure Kindle Club (6FKC) a few weeks ago. And people who never published before and creating full-fledged publishing empires. The “brains” behind the program is Emran. He came to the US from Pakistan when he was young and was working as a furniture salesman only a few months ago. Now, he generates 6-figures a year with his own publishing company.. run entirely through Amazon.

How? Because Emran (and the other 6FKC members) are taking advantage of one of these platforms (in this case, it’s Amazon) and providing products where there is a need. They are getting in front of the traffic. It’s that simple.

As Wayne Gretzky said, “I skate where the puck is going to be, not where it’s been”. And the puck is clearly these platforms that already have the traffic and infrastructure. You’ll see more and more people throwing their hat into the ring in 2014.

Take a look below from a recent post in 6FKC. This is a member who just started about 2 weeks ago and has already published a few books. Now she has a full plan to build out her publishing company in 2014:

This is the year to start getting serious about your business.

Look for other people you can work with. People who are subject matter experts.. and help get them published. Think “mini-partnerships”.

If you are building out your product portfolio – you simply plug them in. Most people have no clue about getting started on Amazon, iTunes, or Google Play. You can go wide in multiple markets or deep into one specific market and dominate it (imagine “Dummies” but for your specific niche market).

We are just at the beginning of the publishing revolution – but the window will not be open forever.

2014 will be an exciting year for those embrace publishing.

How to Create the Perfect Viral Marketing Video

Every once in a while, someone just nails a concept.

This family turned an ordinary “Christmas Card” into a viral video that not only showcases their personality (and makes it fun), they also have a brilliant transition to a BUSINESS plug. Watch this now and try not to smile (I double dare you).

It’s brilliant. They created a video that is memorable, fun and highly viral.. with a plug for their new business. Check out the lyrics at around the 3 minute mark…

“It’s the biggest decision of his life
He’s going to quit his job and work with his wife.

We’ll be making videos just like these
For politicians and companies.”

Then, a “subtle” plug and even mentions their new web site. Bravo.

Screen Shot 2013-12-18 at 8.46.59 AM

Screenshot of their “shameless” plug

There are so many takeaways from this video.. I’m sure an entire course could be taught on it. Here are some of my takeaways..

  • Fun: don’t take yourself so seriously
  • Get creative with music
  • Keep it short (their entire video was just 3 minutes and 38 seconds)
  • It’s better to take your time and make ONE incredibly memorable video than 15 so-so, average ones
  • You CAN incorporate your family and business.. when done with a little humor
  • Pay attention to the mix between live audio and the music recording. It breaks it up and keeps your interest.
  • Lots of different locations.. inside, outside, different rooms. Again, much more interesting than just one shot in one location.
  • If possible, try to have really cute kids (always helps!)

My only negative about the video? I didn’t think of it first.

Oh well, watch for next year… I’m thinking the Lee’s will put out a new video card called “The Hanukah Pajamas”.

But for now.. we’ll have to settle for our regular (and also exceptionally cute) Holiday card below:

Your Wake-Up Call

Ok, time for a little butt kicking today. You might love this post.. or find it a little uncomfortable. Either way, here we go:

Never in the history of the world has it been easier (and less expensive) to start a digital lifestyle business.

Heck, we have people in the 6FKC who have had a book ghostwritten, cover designed, laid-out and uploaded to Amazon… then become a best-seller within 3 days for about $75 (including having the book written!!).

That’s right – less than $100 bucks and their book was done and SELLING online. Often making that initial $100 back in as few as 48 hours.

But there was one person who was complaining that he found a great writer, but the writer wanted $125. He wanted tips to negotiate with the writer to get him down anther $20.. I gave him a loving (but firm) blasting… after all, we are talking about having an entire friggin book written for you for just $125. This is an INVESTMENT in your business.

Tell me another business that can be started for such a low price and have the potential to make you money month after month?

Maybe it’s because I’m 41, but I remember how much it cost to start my personal training business over 20 years ago.

There was no elance. No 99designs. And certainly no Fiverr.

I had to go into the Yellow Pages (remember those??) to find a guy to create my logo. He worked from the back of an art/frame shop (I couldn’t make this up if I tried). And it cost me probably $400 or so (that was around a week’s worth of pay for me at the time).  Then, all the other stuff I did like print flyers, postcards, etc… it cost me probably $1,500.

At that time, I also looked into starting my own gym. Even a low-budget one would have cost around $25K plus a personal guarantee for 3-5 years of rent. And that would have been super-low budget with a simple rubber flooring, some mirrors and used fitness equipment.

Now – fast forward to today.. you can literally start an online business for no money (like a Facebook Continuity program).

But even if you want to spend $100… you could easily get a domain name and a very basic WordPress site up. Drive some free traffic by blogging, youtube, social media, article writing, etc – and you’re in business.

And even with start-up costs less than $100, there are some people who say they simply don’t have it. Ok, I get it, there are a lot of people struggling to pay the bills. Hey, I’ve been there and it wasn’t that long ago for me.

However, you have to ask yourself one question…

You don’t have any money? None at all? Not even $100?

Since I consider myself a realist… here’s a dose of reality for you.

First step, look through everything you own. That’s right, take a full inventory.

I’m talking furniture, books, dvds, clothes, old kids toys, etc. Leave no stone unturned.

Do you really need that bookshelf? Or desk?

Heck, depending on the quality, I bet you could put your desk on Craigslist today and sell it for a quick $100 or so. Then, just go back to craigslist and you’ll see a section called “free” where people are giving away their current desks.

You sell yours for $100 and either pick up a free one (or work from the library, your kitchen table or your lap on the floor!). You’ll also be able to get some clutter out of your life.

Or you eat peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for the next week to save money.

Or you shut off your cable.

Or get a different plan for your cell phone.

Or, you do what a friend of mine did when he was down on his luck… you swallow your pride and deliver pizza at night. Or walk your neighbors dog and scoop up their sh*t if that’s what it takes.

I worked my ass off for years getting up at 5am to train a client BEFORE I went to my full-time job. Then, trained clients after work (and at night, took graduate classes for a Master’s Degree in Exercise Physiology). And in my spare minutes, I started building my Internet business.

You sacrifice short-term and do what is necessary so you can live a better life, long-term.

You stop making excuses.

You stop whining.

When a barrier is put up in front of you – you run right through it…. and you never, ever look back.

But first, you have to put things in perspective and appreciate the positives. Despite it being a far from perfect world – we are all blessed to live in the times we do. Becoming financially independent has never been easier – but the window of opportunity will not stay open forever. I say that because as more people discover how simple it is to create a lifestyle digital business, the competition will increase.

It’s why I tell my clients over and over again.

Get focused. Get serious. Sacrifice, if necessary. And get going… FAST.

Coach Lee, out.

P.S. For the first time, I will teach how I built 3 6-figure businesses (in recurring revenue) the past year using just Facebook for no money. Register for the free training right now.. the clock is ticking…

You Need This to be Successful

bigstock-Humility-Road-Sign-Illustratio-44641996If you want to have success. And be a true leader in your industry, you must learn humility.

Over time, I lost my way. My ego grew to the point where I started to actually think my business was “about me” (it wasn’t).

I’ve got news for you.. it’s not about you. Or what you want. Or about stroking your ego. You don’t know everything and the moment you think you do – you’re in big, big trouble.

It’s about creating a business that serves your customers

The trappings are powerful – but you must always stay grounded. No matter what.

Even though I have an amazingly supportive wife and family to keep my feet on the ground, I still let my ego get the best of me (yes, the pull is that strong).

It’s one reason I no longer travel and speak at other events. I became addicted to the stage and the spotlight and all the stuff that doesn’t matter (it really doesn’t matter one bit). So I simply chose to walk away from it all. No looking back and no regrets.

Check out this short video about the power of humility by Hall-of-Fame basketball coach, Rick Pitino:

Humbly yours,

Most copy doesn’t have enough emotion… but there’s good news. I was just given a great free PDF (he had a retail price of $97 on it) and you can have it for free (the author gave me permission to give it to you).

It’s short, but filled with hundreds of “emotional” words to make your copy stronger. Just one new “emotional hook” can increase your conversions.

Why Positive Thinking Alone Does NOT Work: Part II

I recently wrote a post about the myth of positive thinking.

I’d like to clarify this a bit and dig a little deeper…

There are really two parts to being successful.

#1. What’s Inside You: This is the mental component. Having goals. Being driven. Thinking positive. Not falling into the trap of “money is evil”. It’s all of the stuff we’ve read about.

#2. The Doing: This is when you stop making excuses and actually start doing. In other words, the implementation.

bigstock-Happy-Contemplated-Young-Man-I-49720754Again, based on my personal experience and coaching thousands of people over the years – here’s what I’ve found.

People use the “positive thinking” as an excuse. Why? Because it’s EASY.

“I can be successful just by imagining it? Or talking to myself in a mirror? Sign me up!”.

People want easy. Most people don’t want to work for it. We even had someone want to drop out of 6FKC because she “didn’t have time”… huh? You don’t have 10 minutes a day to build recurring revenue virtually on autopilot while Amazon drives traffic? 10 minutes of work a day isn’t worth it for you?

Please don’t misunderstand me.. I like personal development products. I really do. I’ve bought ’em all and still listen to them. If I need a jolt, I can listen to some Jim Rohn or Les Brown – that stuff is like my Mozart.

But those programs ALONE will not get you where you need to go. It’s only half of the equation. Yes, an important half, but it’s half nonetheless.

I am a fan of thinking positively – but also a fan of reality. You MUST immediately implement those ideas into something tangible. Period.

Believe me, I’ve personally COACHED some of the biggest named personal development guru’s to build their business… because even they understand positive thoughts alone will not build a high-converting sales funnel!

Network marketing uses this all the time (and no, I’m not talking about all network marketers and companies.. but in general, this is what I’ve seen quite a bit).

Their events are 95% personal development. And they say if you don’t achieve success, it’s YOUR fault because you didn’t apply the principles. When, in fact, you might be applying the principles.. it’s just their model (or product or system or pricing) is flawed.

After all, they say, look how well this is working for ME. I’m driving a fancy car. And making big commission checks. And if it works for ME but it’s not working for YOU… it’s 100% YOUR FAULT.

But what if that’s not entirely true?

What if you ARE a positive person? And you know your craft. And you invested $10,000 in a personal development program.. and you’re still not getting results. Then what?

Could it be their training is flawed? Or you didn’t get enough assistance on the implementation? Or there is a lot of people selling the SAME thing and there’s nothing to differentiate you (or your product) from your competitors?

Just yesterday, I did a coaching call with a well-known professional soccer coach. He’s was trying to make money teaching soccer online – but failing miserably. One year online and just ONE sale. Yes, just one sale.

BUT – he’s very successful “offline”. He’s one of the few people who makes a full-time living as a freelance soccer coach.

And he’s also very positive. However, when I looked at his site.. his failure had nothing to do with his “positive thoughts”, it had to do with implementation. Below is a screenshot of the very first thing you see when you go to his site:

Screen Shot 2013-12-04 at 8.16.14 AM

This was just one problem with his implementation. He asked for the money BEFORE people even knew what he was selling.

Then, he has the nerve to say “all sales are final for the annual subscription”.

I’m pretty sure in the real-world, he talks to parents before asking for money. Not the other way around. I’m surprised he even got one person to join.

Plus, he had about 10 other things wrong with his site (the name, the copy, the hook, the pricing, etc.), but that’s not the point.

The point is he could have spent the next 10 YEARS looking in the mirror and chanting “I’m successful. I already have 1,000 members” and it wouldn’t have changed his conversion rate. Not even a fraction.

For the 20-minute call, I was relentless – telling him the TRUTH and giving him specific ACTION-STEPS. People don’t pay me to be “nice” and stroke their egos.. they pay me for results. Plain and simple.

His mindset was strong. He’s a good guy and trying to do the right thing. He didn’t need more personal development, he needed better implementation.

Some of my clients do need a better mindset. And I drill that in for a few minutes. I tell to get over their fears. Or their perfectionism. Or whatever block they have with a few simple strategies – and then we move on to the ACTION STEPS.

This was the email he sent to me a few hours later:

Screen Shot 2013-12-04 at 8.23.43 AM

You can see how confident and positive he truly is. He admitted where he made the mistake “package and marketing.. are a mess”. And then, followed up with “back to the drawing board…. I am the guy to do this…. making my business into what it can be”.

If he implements what I told him, he will be successful.

This person was not the exception… I see this stuff every single day.

People have been asking me for years to write a “personal development” book and I’ve refused. Because alone, positive thinking is simply not the cure. And if I ever did write one – it would be based in REALITY.

Real action. Real results.

P.S. I’m opening up my “black friday” 20-minute no-holds-barred coaching session for a very short time. One-on-one. Just you and me. This is good for the first 10 people only. Just $99. Seriously. Click here before it sells out again.

Why Positive Thinking Alone Does NOT Work

I used to buy into it as well.

If you just have “positive” thoughts, everything will work out just fine.

Now – here’s the REALITY.

It’s simply not true.

In fact, it’s more about being REALISTIC.

bigstock-Close-Up-Of-Cute-Woman-Thinkin-43067929Go ahead and try it. Look in the mirror and repeat 50 times…”I will get more traffic to my web site.”.

Then – sit back do nothing and see what happens.

Nothing, will happen. Zip. Nadda. Zilch. You won’t get one visitor without action.

Because, and here’s the hard part, the world owes you nothing. If you want something, you have to get off your ass and get it. It’s as simple as that.

I’ve seen too many GOOD people with GOOD intentions and POSITIVE thoughts not make a penny because they just thought “things will work out for me because I’m staying positive.”.

I should know.. I’ve fallen into this trap too. But you quickly realize when your mortgage is due.. the bank doesn’t care how “positive” you are.. the care about the money in your account.

That’s not to say you should be a negative, sad-sack. Not at all. But there is a much better way to get results that actually works…

Using the above example of “traffic”… if you were more realistic, it could have been more like…

“I know getting traffic can be challenging. And there are different types of traffic. Everything from PPC and affiliate training to social media. I understand I will have to be smart and strategic to get traffic. It might take some time or money for testing.. but I will dig in deep and continue to take action. I’ll start with this one traffic tactic and focus on that one”.

Then, you come up with an actual plan. And you roll up your sleeves and get to work.

I just met a guy at Starbucks a couple of weeks ago. He was familiar with my work and wanted to meet me.

We chatted for a few minutes and he talked about how he just spent $10,000.00 on a “personal development” seminar. He left feeling good (temporarily) – but it has NOT translated to even one dollar in his pocket (but it definitely made this personal development guru $10k richer!).

I can guarantee if he spent that $10k on his direct business education (or on a media buy for a site that’s converting) – he would have had a much better chance of making that back many times over.

There’s comes a time when you have to stop the stalling.

You have to stop lying to yourself.

You have to stop being scared.

You have to stop procrastinating.

You have to stop pretending that just “being positive” will be the answer to your dreams (it isn’t).

It comes down to action and persistence. It comes down to being driven.

It comes down to DOING. Period.

P.S. Speaking of action… don’t miss the next FREE 6 Figure Kindle Club training. We have hundreds of people who already published their first product and making sales within 3 days.
