Don’t Fail Like This Guy!
We are finally putting the finishing touches on our new house - and I just saw my electrician.
He’s a hard working guy but he looked overly stressed out.
He told me he just opened up a convenience store/deli. I was floored.
This guy is a talented electrician with his own company and he opens a deli in the same location where the same type of business has failed dozens of times before.
It’s just something he wanted to do - but he forgot to do his homework.
He didn’t realize just how many hours he would have to put in.
And the deli biz isn’t as glamorous as it might seem (ok, well the deli business doesn’t seem galmorous at all - who wants to smell like a pastrami on rye all day?
Now, he working around the clock at the deli (which is losing money) and his electrician biz is starting to go down the tubes.
What’s the moral of this story.
Well, it is two-fold.
1. Stick with your strengths. If you are a great personal trainer and hate the “biz” side of it, you probably shouldn’t open your own gym.
If you like eating pizza, it doesn’t mean you should open a pizzeria.
2. Picture your ultimate lifestyle FIRST - then build a business around that. Most people have it backwards.
I’m going to paraphrase Stephen Covey here:
Most people spend their whole lives climbing the ladder of success only to realize, when they get to the top, the ladder has been leaning against the wrong wall.
So my question to you is: what wall is your ladder leaning against.
Stay strong,
Ryan
