Your Online Business is Already Obsolete!

By the time you finish reading this post – your business may already be obsolete.

Ok, I might be exaggerating a little bit.. but not much.

The web moves so fast. And I’m not just talking about technology, I’m talking about the marketing and the sales process too.

 

CONVERSIONS AND TRAFFIC

What worked great just a few months, weeks or even days aago might not be working today. You think I’m kidding?

Overnight a major marketing tactic used by thousands of entrepreneurs for almost a decade was basically eliminated. That’s right. Google decided to make some changes to their algorithm and by the time we woke up the next morning, large “content aggregators” like ezinearticles and squidoo were virtually eliminated from Google.

Poof! Just like that.

Gone.

So if you’re entire marketing strategy was to rely on just one of those tactics – you are in trouble. And not just trouble, I’m talking big ass trouble.

Just think about how quickly things changed with a sales web site.

First, it was just long copy (this was back in 1999)

Then, it was long sales copy with audio.

Followed by long sales copy with video.

Soon came video sales letters.

And now it’s webinars.

But if you didn’t change. If you stuck your head in the sand and didn’t adapt, your long sales copy with no video would probably see a big drop in conversions. And a drop in conversions means less money in your pocket. And that kinda sucks, doesn’t it?

KEEP LEARNING

So what do you do?

Spend time everyday studying what’s working now. Carve out 30 minutes or so to just “surf” sites in your marketplace. Go to the Clickbank marketplace and look at the Top 10 sites in each category. See what big players like Amazon and Zappos are going on their checkout pages.

Go to events (not pitchfests, but events with actual content!).

Mastermind with other like-minded entrepreneurs.

But BE CAREFUL.

Don’t fall into the trap of spending the entire day just “learning” and not enough time “doing”.

Again, limit it to maybe 20-30 minutes. Take notes. Heck, you can even do this while you are watching The Kardashians.

Then, get off your ass and IMPLEMENT. The ONLY way to know if it works is to try it yourself.

If you see a cool looking “add to cart” button, try it.

You see a new upsell idea – give it a shot.

But never, ever rest on your laurels.

The minute… no, make that the SECOND you THINK you know it all – you’re in deep shit.

Keep innovating and most importantly…

Keep on rocking!

  1. You aren’t kidding! I learned this the hard way in the beginning. It seems Google has blind sided me a couple of times. Even with SEO rankings. Where I used to be steadily in the top 3 for my major key words, suddenly I was bounced to the top of the second page! What?!?!? I had to work a little magic just to get back to the first page. I am now playing catch up to try and climb that ladder back to the top slots.

    1. James – it can definitely sting when you rely on just ONE thing. Whether it’s traffic, a sale letter, etc.

      And forget every trying to figure out Google…

    Thanks again for super article. Before I comment on this article I want to thank you for the replay you gave me last time on the question I had on “The $426,000 Case Study” article. I followed exactly what you said and it’s been 5 days since implementing your suggestion and I’m quit happy with the results I’m seeing. My magazine Site visitors are growing by 3% to 7% daily and starting getting comments from my readers for been personal on my newsletters.

    So, coming to this another great super article, this sentence caught my attention and its really true want you saying here “Don’t fall into the trap of spending the entire day just “learning” and not enough time “doing”. Before I work on my online business, I start by visiting blogs like yours and other blogs that are in my niche, read newsletters that I receive on a daily bases and then try to implement and make changes to constantly improve my sites. This really helps. I always Lough when I look at the first designs of my sites in 2008 and how they have changed from then to now.

    the issue is that the platform does matter.
    every business is obsolete with the introduction of new methods
    but, if one understands his/her ways, it will be a goldmine around obsolete business

  7. ryan…. good post… you forget now with the panda updates…. i believe google is de-indexing squeeze pages…. one of my sites got hit hard and de-indexed…. had a squeeze as the homepage for 6 years now.

    Things are definitely changing, we’re kinda in this weird transition phase… adwords is no longer viable… googles recent changes…. articles are nt as strong as before…. you gotta keep up with the changes or you’re gonna bite the dust… fast.

    of the costs. But he’s tryiong none the less. I’ve been using WordPress on a number of websites for about a year and am concerned about switching to another
    platform. I have heard excellent things about blogengine.net.
